Broken Hill — Australia's First Heritage-Listed City
In 2015, Broken Hill made history by becoming the very first Australian city to be included on the National Heritage List.
A City Built on Silver & Grit
Recognised alongside icons like the Sydney Opera House and Great Barrier Reef, Broken Hill earned national heritage status for its extraordinary contribution to Australia's industrial, social, and artistic development. Imperial Fine Accommodation stands proud in the heart of this historic district.
Why Broken Hill Made History
Broken Hill's National Heritage listing, announced on 20 January 2015 by then-Environment Minister Greg Hunt, followed a decade-long campaign by Broken Hill City Council and recognised more than 130 years of continuous mining operations, the city's pioneering role in occupational health and safety standards, and its origins as the birthplace of Australia's industrial relations movement. The Australian Heritage Council found Broken Hill met eight of the nine possible National Heritage criteria, an exceptionally high bar, placing it alongside Bondi Beach, Uluru-Kata Tjuta, and the Great Barrier Reef on the National Heritage List.
From Silver Discovery to Silver City
The story begins in September 1883, when boundary rider Charles Rasp, working on Mount Gipps Station, picked up a heavy rock he mistakenly believed was tin oxide. The find led to the formation of the "Syndicate of Seven" and, in 1885, the Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP), which would go on to become one of the world's largest resource companies. You can explore the full account of this discovery and its industrial legacy in our Mining Heritage and Heritage & History guides.
