A Landmark of Broken Hill's Silver Boom
Imperial Fine Accommodation opened its doors in 1906, at the peak of the mining boom that transformed Broken Hill from a lonely outpost on the Barrier Ranges into one of the richest mining towns in the world. The building's solid stone walls, pressed-metal ceilings, and wide timber lace verandas reflect the confidence and prosperity of the era, when the discovery of one of the planet's largest silver-lead-zinc ore bodies by boundary rider Charles Rasp in 1883 set off a wave of construction across the town. Guests staying at Imperial today walk the same corridors that once hosted mine managers, travelling merchants, and prospectors chasing their fortunes in the Silver City.
Heritage Restoration, Modern Comfort
Every renovation at Imperial has been carried out in careful consultation with heritage architects, preserving the timber lace verandas, pressed-metal ceiling roses, and thick stone walls that define the property's character while discreetly integrating reverse-cycle air conditioning, high-speed Wi-Fi, and modern ensuite bathrooms. This balance of old and new is part of a broader commitment described in our Heritage Stewardship & Sustainability approach, which pairs passive-cooling masonry construction with solar-heated pool technology.
Location in the Heart of a National Heritage City
Imperial sits on the corner of Oxide and Cobalt Streets, in the historic heart of Broken Hill — Australia's First Heritage-Listed City. In January 2015, Broken Hill became the first entire city in Australia to be added to the National Heritage List, joining icons such as the Sydney Opera House and Uluru. Guests can explore the town's famous art trail, detailed in our Art Galleries & Culture guide, or relax at day's end in Imperial's own courtyard pool and billiard lounge, described fully on our Facilities page.
