OUTBACK CINEMA & HISTORY

Silverton — Broken Hill's Famous Ghost Town

Located just 25km west of Broken Hill, Silverton is an iconic outback settlement framed by desert plains.

  • The Silverton Hotel: Classic cold beer, outback pub fare, and movie memorabilia.
  • Mad Max 2 Museum: Original film props and vehicles from the movie filmed on nearby plains.
  • Silverton Gaol Museum: Step inside the 1889 stone prison filled with mining artifacts.

A Ghost Town Born of Its Own Silver Rush

Silverton was established in 1883 following the discovery of silver and lead deposits in the area, and by the end of 1885 its population had swelled to around 3,000 residents. When the richer Broken Hill lode was discovered nearby — the same find made by Charles Rasp detailed on our Mining Heritage page — Silverton's population gradually relocated, leaving behind the stark, near-empty settlement visitors see today.

Hollywood's Favourite Outback Backdrop

Silverton's wide, treeless plains have made it one of the most filmed locations in Australia, most famously providing the backdrop for the Mad Max films, whose props and vehicles are preserved at the Mad Max 2 Museum. The surrounding Mundi Mundi Plains, where visitors can watch the curvature of the earth at sunset, also host the annual Mundi Mundi Bash music festival, detailed on our Events & Festivals page.

Planning a Silverton Day Trip

Most visitors combine a Silverton visit with a stop at the Living Desert Sculptures on the return drive to Broken Hill, timed for sunset — see our Living Desert Sculptures page for details, or follow our full Itinerary Ideas for a structured day-by-day plan.
