Silverton — A Ghost Town With Real Cinema History
Just 25km from Broken Hill, Silverton predates its larger neighbour, having been established in 1883 after silver and lead were discovered in the area. Its stark, wide-open plains have made it one of Australia's most filmed outback backdrops, most famously for the Mad Max franchise. Read our dedicated Silverton guide for a full rundown of the historic Silverton Hotel, the Mad Max Museum, and the 1889 Silverton Gaol.
Menindee Lakes & Kinchega National Park
Kinchega National Park, roughly 110km south of Broken Hill, was established in 1967 on the traditional lands of the Barkindji people and once formed part of an 800,000-hectare pastoral lease. Its historic 1875 woolshed processed six million sheep over its working life and is now heritage-listed, while the Darling River red gums and Menindee Lakes support abundant birdlife year-round.
Mutawintji National Park
Roughly 130km from Broken Hill, Mutawintji protects ancient Aboriginal rock art and rugged red gorges in the traditional country of the Wiljakali and neighbouring peoples. Combine a Mutawintji visit with the stargazing opportunities detailed in our Stargazing & Outback Astronomy guide, or plan the whole trip using our Itinerary Ideas page.
