The Palace Hotel, More Than a Meal
Built in 1889 as a temperance-movement coffee house before becoming a licensed hotel, the Palace Hotel is now internationally recognised for its 500 square metres of murals, painted largely by Indigenous artist Gordon Waye at the direction of owner Mario Celotto, who asked that every scene include a water feature so the pub would feel like "an oasis in the desert". The hotel became a household name after doubling as the characters' stopover in the 1994 film *The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert*, and guests can still book the Priscilla Suite where the cast stayed.
Classic Broken Hill Institutions
Bells Milk Bar preserves an original 1950s soda fountain, serving the same style of malted milkshakes that have made it a heritage-listed local institution, while The Astra Hotel offers a more contemporary regional dining experience built around local steaks and curated wine lists. Both sit within easy walking distance of Imperial Fine Accommodation — see our Getting Around Broken Hill guide for exact walking times from Oxide Street.
Pairing Dining With Your Stay
Guests booking one of our Special Packages — particularly the Brushmen Art & Heritage Experience — often combine a gallery day with dinner at the Palace or Astra before returning to unwind at Imperial's courtyard pool, detailed on our Facilities page.
